5 Shaving Tips for Sensitive Skin

More than one in three guys say their skin gets red and rashy at the slightest grooming provocation. The situation that causes the most complaints: shaving. Willfully taking a steel blade to your face and scraping away hair (go figure) is less than ideal for those prone to breakouts. There is no hard and fast solution for shaving with sensitive skin. But with these eight tips you can significantly lower your odds of irritation.

1- Exfoliate
The smoother the surface your razor travels across, the fewer chances it will catch on something, nicking the skin beneath. Before shaving, wash your face with a gently exfoliating scrub such as Clinique for Men Face Scrub to remove dead skin and potential razor hang-ups. [RM106 :  LAZADA]

2- Match the Razor to Your Hair
Shaving causes friction against the skin, and friction causes irritation. Your goal: Minimize the damage. “When it comes to sensitive skin, hair type is also part of the equation,” says Charly McCoy, a Master Barber at Kiehl’s Hell’s Kitchen Barber Shop. “I recommend no more than two- or three-blade razors for straight hair types, and a single blade razor for curly or coarse hair types.”  

3- Go With the Grain
The golden rule of shaving is especially true if you have sensitive skin: Always follow the direction of your hair growth. Also resist pushing down. A quality razor with a sharp blade requires minimal pressure to get the job done.

Also, despite what you may have read about it being better to shave at night, McCoy says that’s fiction. “Shaving at night versus the morning normally doesn’t have any advantages in terms of preventing irritation,” he says. “However, if you want to avoid cuts and nicks, there is something to be said about shaving when you’re feeling more alert and refreshed in the A.M.”

4- Clean Your Blade
As you shave, excess cream and discarded hair gunk up the razor. Rinse the blade in the sink after every three or four strokes to remove the build up, which hinders the smooth glide of the razor and can cause a rash. You’ll also want to change out your blades more frequently than someone with less sensitive skin, as a dull blade will grab at the hair more, causing redness. Every two to three shaves is best.

5- Stay Hydrated
A major cause of shaving-related breakouts is dry skin. The sudden addition of moisture-rich shaving cream to dry skin can clog pores. Maintaining your skin’s moisture content with a daily lotion will help, but be sure to choose one formulated for sensitive skin. “Sensitive skin products have fewer ingredients, like fragrances, with a high potential for allergic contact dermatitis,” explains Dr. Benabio. “Other potentially irritating ingredients such as salicylic acid (which softens skin) are usually not included in sensitive skin products.” Try Cetaphil Men’s Daily Facial Lotion with SPF 15. Another reason dry skin leads to breakouts: “Whenever I’m doing a straight razor shave in the barber shop, I can always tell when the client is dehydrated because the skin is tougher to work with and the blade drags,” says McCoy. “I always advise clients to drink plenty of water post-shave and use a great after shave to restore hydration and moisture.”
